The Issue

As a diagnosis of terminal blood cancer (Myeloma) led to my medical retirement, I genuinely feel the urgency and necessity of this petition. As a full-fledged contributor to National Insurance (NI), I and individuals like me should have the right to access our state pensions early when diagnosed with a life-limiting illness. Unfortunately, under current circumstances, it is highly unlikely that I will ever receive a state pension - a circumstance that is significantly unjust.

Furthermore, it is imperative to understand the broader scenario. The National Audit Office has revealed that 'approximately 10% of men and 14% of women do not claim their state pension in the first year they can.' This figure is likely significantly higher for individuals with life-limiting illnesses. Our current system essentially eradicates our opportunity to use the benefits we've spent our lives contributing to, at the time when we need them the most.

It is high time we change this system, ensuring those diagnosed with terminal illnesses can access their state pensions early, granting financial security during a time of physical and emotional stress. Please sign this petition to secure our future, and the future of all those affected by life limiting illnesses.
