The Issue

As early college high school students, we have embarked on a unique academic journey that demands rigorous discipline, determination, and dedication. Unlike the regular high school path, our program has required us to simultaneously meet the challenging expectations of both high school and college coursework. Despite the hectic schedules and the pressure to maintain high academic standards, we have persevered and achieved what many might consider a remarkable feat of balancing these dual roles.

However, at the culmination of our hard work, during our high school graduation ceremony, we find ourselves wearing the same colored gowns as every other student. While the achievement of graduating high school is undoubtedly commendable for all, the distinctive efforts and accomplishments of early college students deserve special acknowledgment. Allowing us to wear black graduation gowns would be a simple yet meaningful way to visually honor the additional workload and commitment we have undertaken over the past four years.

Recognizing early college graduates with distinctive gowns would both celebrate students' academic achievements and inspire younger students to pursue this rigorous but rewarding path. It would visibly promote the value of hard work and perseverance while fostering a spirit of excellence. Moreover, it would give us a sense of pride and validation as we transition into our futures, be it further education or entering the workforce.

Schools across the United States, like in our local district, are increasingly adopting early college high school programs, recognizing their benefits in preparing students for the challenges of higher education and beyond. We have worked tirelessly, often going beyond our comfort zones and sacrificing personal time to seize the opportunities these programs offer. Wearing black gowns would symbolize this extraordinary journey and set a precedent for honoring academic excellence.

We urge school administrators, district officials, and policymakers to consider this request seriously. Please grant us this simple yet powerful form of recognition; it is a gesture of true appreciation for what we have endured and achieved. Sign this petition to join us in advocating for this change and help us ensure that the hard work of early college high school students everywhere is rightfully acknowledged.
