Allow dredging of the Little Pee Dee River
The Issue
Growing up on the Little Pee Dee River, I cherished countless memories water skiing and enjoying the pristine beauty that this river offered right in front of my home. This waterway was not just a backdrop but an integral part of my life, weaving through my childhood memories and those of many others in our community. However, the river we once knew and loved is now suffering.
The Little Pee Dee River was designated a scenic river, a well-intentioned decision aimed at preserving its natural charm. While this designation safeguards the river against development and exploitation, it has inadvertently hindered necessary maintenance activities such as dredging. Our beloved river is now so clogged with sand and fallen logs that it struggles to flow freely, severely impacting the ecology and beauty of the area.
The natural blockages hampering the river's flow aren't just unsightly but dangerous. They pose risks to navigation and increase flooding potential during heavy rains, threatening not only those of us living along the riverbanks but the broader community as well. Local wildlife that thrives on this river is also suffering, with habitats disrupted and access to food and clean water impeded.
Dredging the river could restore its natural flow, alleviate flooding risks, and rejuvenate local wildlife habitats. Moreover, selling the sand collected during the dredging process could offset the costs, creating a sustainable economic opportunity for our region. This is a practical and economically viable solution that addresses environmental preservation while respecting the wellbeing of the local community.
We appeal to the State of South Carolina to consider amending the restrictions attached to scenic river designations. By allowing periodic and environmentally responsible dredging, we can preserve the beauty and health of the Little Pee Dee River for generations to come.
