Allow dogs under 45 pounds in plane cabins

The Issue

My dog Bobber was supposed to be small enough to travel with us, but he’s now too big to meet airline cabin size restrictions. This is a painful reality for many families who can’t bring their beloved pets on trips due to outdated airline policies.

Currently, airlines limit dogs in the cabin based on strict size dimensions, not just weight—making it hard for even small-to-medium dogs to qualify. Dogs under 45 pounds can often fit comfortably in cabin spaces without disturbing other passengers. Forcing them into the cargo hold is not only risky, but also distressing for both pets and their owners.

Take a look at the photo of Bobber next to the airline-approved carrier he would be expected to fit into—it’s clearly unrealistic. Yet without fitting in that carrier, he can’t fly with us.

It’s time for airlines to revise these rules. With over 85 million U.S. families owning pets, policies must reflect their importance in our lives. This petition urges airlines and regulators to allow dogs under 45 pounds in the cabin, regardless of rigid carrier dimensions.
