Allow Dogs on Isle of Wight Beaches From September 1st
The Issue
We call on the Isle of Wight Council to update the Dog Control Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) across Island resort beaches—including Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde, and Ventnor—so seasonal restrictions end on August 31st instead of September 30th. Other major coastal tourist destinations like Cornwall have proven that a shorter, more balanced restriction period (running from July 1st to August 31st, 10:00 to 18:00 on most beaches) successfully protects peak-summer beachgoers while supporting dog owners and the local shoulder-season economy. Keeping Island beaches entirely off-limits throughout September unduly penalises local residents and responsible visitors once the school holidays end and tourism calms down; reopening access from September 1st will promote healthy outdoor activity, extend dog-friendly tourism, and modernise our local coastal policy.
