The Issue

Dogs have been our faithful companions for years, joining us on countless hikes and adventures. However, one place dogs are often barred is our country’s beautiful national parks.

This petition is personal not just for me, but for countless pet owners who view their dogs as integral family members and partners in experiencing the outdoors.

Currently, national parks across the US have strict regulations that prohibit dogs or significantly limit pet access to park trails and areas. According to the National Park Service, dogs are allowed only in certain areas to protect wildlife and landscapes. However, this blanket policy unnecessarily restricts responsible pet owners from enjoying these scenic areas with their dogs. With over 85 million households in the U.S. owning a pet, it is time to rethink these restrictions and accommodate dog owners.

Numerous studies show that dog owners are more likely to maintain healthy lifestyles, largely due to increased physical activity from walking and playing with their pets. Opening up more trails not only promotes well-being among pet owners but also encourages more outdoor visits, thereby increasing park revenue through entry fees and ancillary purchases.

To mitigate potential impacts on the environment, park authorities can introduce feasible strategies such as designated dog-friendly trails, implementing strict on-leash regulations, and increasing fines for littering and non-compliance. Many European countries have already implemented such plans successfully, balancing conservation efforts with recreational activities. For instance, the UK allows dogs in national parks with specific guidelines to ensure both environmental protection and public enjoyment.

By revisiting current policies and allowing dogs in more areas of our national parks, we can create a more inclusive and enjoyable outdoor experience. We need park authorities, conservationists, and policymakers to recognize the invaluable bond between people and their pets and prioritize solutions that make our parks accessible for all park-goers.

Suggestions:

  1. Open the parks up to the dogs one day per week. Make it the slowest day for the park.
  2. Don’t allow dogs in areas that are fragile to their presence, for example when certain animals breed.
  3. Charge for those who bring their dogs to off set costs
  4. Have high $ non compliance fee/citations

Sign this petition to urge our national park services to review their policies and open up more trails for dogs so that we, along with our pets, can continue to enjoy the great outdoors together. Together, we can advocate for a future where nature and companionship go hand in hand.
