The Issue

I am a veteran and dog owner who has a PTSD diagnosis. Spending fun, energetic time with my dog is paramount for both our mental and physical health. Walking along Lakeview Avenue is deathly dangerous, and I have had several near misses in my 15 years living in this community. The need for a safe space where dogs and their owners can enjoy the outdoors without risk is urgent.

The ball fields at Springfield Lake in Middle Sackville are currently off-limits to dogs, and this prohibition deprives many local dog owners the chance to use this wonderful community space. Any damage and mess observed at these fields has been caused by both humans and geese, not dogs. Allowing dogs would not only provide them with a safe, enriching environment but also help in unifying our community around a shared love for our pets and the outdoors.

In many parts of HRM, shared public spaces like baseball fields and parks allow dogs because they provide mental stimulation and exercise.  Exercise is crucial for maintaining a dog's health and behavior. Not only do dogs need the physical activity, but interactions in shared spaces can significantly reduce stress and improve mood for both pets and their owners.

Opening up the Springfield Lake Ball Fields to dogs would not only meet the recreational needs of numerous pet owners but also align with local  trends towards pet-friendly communities, contributing positively to the mental health and well-being of residents. It's time to rethink the restrictions and allow responsible dog owners to enjoy these community spaces with their pets.

Help us change this policy for the betterment of both pets and their owners. Sign the petition to open Springfield Lake Ball Fields to dogs.
