The Issue

At a school board meeting on November 17th, the school board decided to install Jvanna Hanks as the new superintendent. This was done through no transparent process, all discussions were held behind closed doors. No other candidates were announced or publicly discussed.  No public comment was permitted. And on top of all this, 3 out of the 5 school board members are leaving, 2 of which due to be elected out of their seats on the school board.

This is just the latest example of the GMCS school board making decisions for us without community input and now without the electoral will to be making those decisions. In other school districts, including in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, this process is in the public eye with public input, with outside candidates able to apply, and with the options known and able to be questioned by the board and the community.

The three incoming school board members, Georgianna Desiderio, Dr. Valory Wangler, and Barbara Colaianni-Wagner have all publicly stated their plans to include teachers, staff, parents, students, and the community in the process of choosing the highest educational position in GMCS and it is no less than what the community deserves after asking for change in the school board at the polls.

Sign this to call for the current school board to rescind it's decision and for the new school board to include the teachers, staff, parents, and the community in choosing a new superintendent in a transparent process that prioritizes the needs and will of the people of Gallup McKinley County.
