The Issue

Please sign to demand change at Chaska High school so that present and future graduating seniors at CHS can decorate their caps for graduation!!

Chaska High School DOES NOT allow us to decorate our caps for graduation.

This rule DOES NOT exist in writing in our student handbook. In fact the only time this rule has been sent out to students is through one email that Ms. Kathy Fontes sent out on Apr 11. It simply stated "Please do not decorate or write" under proper student attire/behavior for graduation. This doesn't provide any clarity as to why students are not allowed to decorate their caps but instead simply tries to limit student expression. Students have one chance to graduate high school which means for some this is the only time they will ever walk across a stage wearing their cap and gown to receive a diploma. It would be so cool to see the creative ways that students decorate their caps in order to express themselves and celebrate all they have done at Chaska High School.

Not to mention, Chanhassen High School IS allowed to decorate their caps for graduation. So two high schools, in the same district, following the same district handbook, have completely different rules for graduation.

Chaska caps SHOULD be allowed to be decorated. If there were to be an issue the Chaska administration could handle it in the same manner that happens when we are at school, sporting events, or other district activities.

As a graduating senior I am requesting a change. I, and so many other seniors, would like the option to decorate our caps for graduation. There is no reason that seniors should not have the option to decorate their caps in order to express themselves one last time to celebrate all of their success, hardships, and individuality.

Please sign and share to help us push for change at Chaska HS!!!
