The Issue

I always had a fascination with ducks. Not only are they adorable but their utility as prolific egg-layers made them my preferred choice over chickens. This passion led me to explore food independence and urban farming, a lifestyle choice that not only benefits me but can benefit countless others in our community. However, one thing stands in our way: the current city ordinance in Dallas.

Under the existing regulations, Dallas residents are permitted to keep domestic chickens (including roosters) but not ducks, This discrepancy seems arbitrary and unfair, especially when considering the benefits that domestic ducks can provide. Ducks lay larger eggs compared to chickens and average more eggs per year than chickens. Ducks are known to be more social creatures, offering companionship and joy for families who choose to care for them. Moreover, the belief that ducks require extensive water sources is a myth; ducks can thrive with minimal water (think kiddie pool) when proper maintenance is observed. Under the current zoning you can keep domesticate ducks if you live on a property of 3 acres or larger which, if you live in Dallas, is almost non existent for residential. Furthermore, this limitation implies that domestic ducks require a great deal of space which is counter to common knowledge in agricultural circles and misaligned with standard husbandry practice.

Importantly, allowing ducks would fortify our drive towards food independence. Given the current trends in sustainability and local farming, more residents are looking to produce their own food. The states of Texas has even acknowledged the importance of protecting agricultural freedoms. Urban farming represents a monumental step towards self-sufficiency, environmental conservation, and community resilience.

Why shouldn't Dallas residents have the opportunity to enjoy fresh, local eggs from ducks kept responsibly in their backyards? Ducks can easily conform to the same regulations currently applied to chickens, ensuring clean and safe farming practices. By lifting this restriction, we empower our community, promote sustainable living, and celebrate the diversity of domestic farming.

Join me in calling on the Dallas City Council to amend the ordinance and grant us the right to keep domestic ducks alongside chickens. By doing so, we not only honor personal freedoms but enhance our commitment to local, sustainable food sources.
