Currently, the city of Council Grove only allows its citizens to keep one non-chicken fowl. To some, this may not matter, but for those who desire to partake of the many health benefits offered by fresh duck eggs, this poses a problem. Most families cannot get a sufficient amount of eggs from only one duck, not to mention the fact that ducks are very social animals that thrive best with others of their kind. 

Most domesticated duck breeds are content to stay within a fenced boundary close to their water supply. They are excellent foragers and can make up a large portion of their diet on foraging alone, helping families to save more money on feed and even aiding in keeping unwanted pests out of the garden. Ducks are less likely to tear up a yard than chickens, and tend to be more resistant to harsh weather and disease. Duck eggs are bigger in size than chicken eggs and also contain more nutrients, helping them to go a bit farther. Their thicker shells also help them to have a longer shelf life. These more practical benefits aside, ducks are said to have fun personalities, to be easily trained, and to have a level of care that is helpful in beginning to teach children responsibility.

We, the citizens of Council Grove and our fellow supporters from all around, ask that section 2-402 of Article 4 of the Council Grove ordinances be revised to include ducks as an alternative option to chickens, allowing families to keep up to four ducks just as they are allowed to keep up to four chickens, so long as proper guidelines are followed.
