The Issue

Bad hail storms have wreaked havoc on my property in Edgecliff Village, Texas. The relentless barrage of ice and rain has damaged my vehicle multiple times, causing undue stress and financial strain. Each time I hear the news about an approaching storm, I worry. Not only about potential injuries from the storm, but also about the repairs I might have to make again.

Unfortunately, the existing local zoning regulations prevent me and fellow residents from building carports, which could offer necessary protection. Carports are essential structures that can shield vehicles from harsh weather conditions, like the hailstorms we frequently experience here. Constructing a carport would allow me to safeguard my investment and alleviate some of the storm-related anxieties.

Studies have shown that hailstorms cause billions of dollars in damage annually across the U.S. (source: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). Guarding against such damage with affordable solutions should be encouraged rather than hindered by outdated regulations.

Neighboring areas have already adapted their laws, allowing residents to construct protective structures. It's time for Edgecliff Village to reconsider its stance. By modifying the zoning regulations, our small community can adapt to current weather realities and help residents protect their property and reduce potential damage costs.

I urge community leaders to review and amend the laws so that residents can build carports. Please help us bring this change for the betterment of our community’s safety and resilience. Sign this petition to support the modification of zoning laws to allow carport construction.
