Allow community voting on local land sales
Allow community voting on local land sales
The Issue
The residents of Madison County deserve a say in the decisions that directly impact their neighborhoods and lives. Currently, large construction companies can purchase large parcels of land next to established neighborhoods without any input from the local community. This needs to change.
Recently, I noticed that 3 electrical cabinets have appeared directly across from Westgate Drive, the entry into Lindberg Estates in Anderson. I had seen them before next to the tiny houses recently built in 200-300 bock of Lindberg Road. A friend living one street away had his house re-appraised. The realtor told him his house was worth $60K less than what it was 2 months ago. The realtor explained that the low ch income apartment complex was the culprit. You can't get premium dollars for a house sitting just few blocks away from a designated low income housing project built with Federal loans to house illegal immigrants.
While affordable housing is important, it should not come at the expense of existing homeowners' property values and community integrity. Studies have shown that sudden changes in the housing market, such as the influx of inexpensive homes, can lead to a decrease in property values of nearby homes by as much as $50,000 or more.
Additionally, community control over local development supports diversity and inclusion by ensuring different voices are heard and considered. Allowing the community to vote on these critical decisions would mean locals have a direct hand in shaping the future of their neighborhoods. Without this, decisions impacting us are made by outsiders who may not fully understand or value the unique aspects of our community.
Madison County officials must be urged to implement a system that requires community consent before allowing construction companies to buy or construct large-scale projects within the area. A public voting mechanism would empower citizens, protect property values, and promote transparent decision-making.
Sign this petition to demand Madison County enforce community voting for land purchases. For most people, our home is our most valuable possession. The way things are now, we're all trusting that savvy contractor doesn't steal$50K or more from our homes value.
So, do we continue as we are? Or do we protect our investment in our homes?
Protect the value of our homes and the future of our neighborhoods. Together, we can ensure our voices are heard and respected in the choices affecting our community's value.
