Allow coffee and energy drinks in Garland schools
The Issue
In Garland, Texas, the educational atmosphere should be one that empowers students to perform at their highest potential. However, current restrictive policies prohibit the consumption of coffee and energy drinks in schools, potentially hindering students in their pursuit of academic excellence. For many teenagers, early school start times and demanding workloads result in fatigue and decreased concentration, challenges that could be alleviated with the responsible use of caffeine.
Scientific research supports the responsible consumption of coffee and energy drinks, indicating that caffeine can improve attention and memory, and combat sluggishness. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that moderate caffeine intake is safe for adolescents, and can be beneficial when used wisely. Given the increased demands placed on high school students to maintain high grades, participate in extracurricular activities, and prepare for college admissions, these benefits cannot be overlooked.
In a survey conducted among Garland high school students, a significant majority expressed that access to coffee and energy drinks would positively impact their academic performance and energy levels. Safe and controlled access to these beverages could empower students, help them manage their time more effectively, and improve their overall school experience.
Addressing concerns, we propose that schools implement specific guidelines for caffeine consumption, ensuring that it is available only above a certain grade level, and monitored by school staff. Such measures would prevent misuse while allowing students to benefit from the positive effects of caffeine.
It is time for Garland ISD to reconsider its stance on this matter. Allowing coffee and energy drinks in schools could be a transformative change that aligns with students' needs and supports their educational journey. Sign this petition to encourage Garland school authorities to amend their policy and permit these beverages on campus. Together, we can create a more effective and supportive learning environment.
