Elkhart city does not currently allow the ownership of chickens inside city limits. With everyday costs and lack of availability of some products, my family would like to be more self-sustaining. We will be growing a garden to help save money on our produce bill and would like to have some chickens on hand for when eggs are hard to find at the store or just too expensive for our large family. 

The city councilman in charge of my area has shown interest in supporting our endeavor. He suggested that we get a feel for community support in order to get the votes we need to get a change in current policies. 

Goshen city allows chickens in city limits without a permit (they did require one several years ago but have since changed their policies). With proper containment, limits to number of chickens allowed and no roosters, I don't see how chickens could be any more of a nuisance than the many dogs and cats who tend to bark at all hours or roam the neighborhood freely.
