The Issue

My phone is the ONLY way I am able to communicate with my parents during the school day. It is crucial for me to be able to text and call them to inform them about my sports practices and games, as well as any personal issues that may arise during the day. Unfortunately, current policies in Texas public schools restrict the use of cellphones, making it difficult for students like me to stay connected with our families.

In today's connected world, a cellphone is more than just a communication device; it's a vital tool for safety and organization. Students deserve the right to stay in touch with their families, especially in emergencies or for logistical planning related to school activities. For many, like myself, cellphones are essential for coordinating transportation after school sports and activities, ensuring safety, and maintaining peace of mind for both students and their families.

Prohibiting cellphones in schools can lead to unnecessary stress and missed opportunities to communicate important information promptly. Moreover, responsible use of cellphones can foster better organization and time management among students, as access to digital planners and reminders can aid in academic success.

Research indicates that 95% of teenagers in the United States own or have access to a smartphone. By integrating cellphones responsibly into the school environment, educators can also leverage educational apps and tools to enhance learning and engagement in classroom settings.

We urge the education policymakers in Texas to reconsider the current cellphone ban in public schools and adopt more flexible policies that recognize the importance of connectivity in students' lives. Implementing guidelines for responsible use, rather than an outright ban, can address concerns while acknowledging the realities of modern life.

Sign this petition to support allowing cellphones in Texas public schools and help create an environment that respects and accommodates the needs of students and their families.
