Allow Cellphones in Louisiana Schools During Free Time

Allow Cellphones in Louisiana Schools During Free Time
The Issue
This is deeply personal to myself and my peers, because as high school students, we are currently being treated little better than kindergartners. Being allowed to use cellphones during non-instructional periods—like lunch or free time—should not be a contentious point. It is an intrinsic part of growing up in today’s digital age. Besides, it has been shown that the pros of using cellphones for recreational purposes outweigh the cons.
According to a study by the London School of Economics, schools that banned cellphones noted an increase in students' test scores (London School of Economics, 2015). However, they emphasized that the benefits were limited to the 20% of schools with the most restrictive policies. Therefore, permitting cellphones during free time has limited negative impact on education.
It's crucial to underscore that our educational issues run deeper than the mere presence of phones –- the state's curriculum itself needs reconsideration. We are in the bottom percentile nationwide, not 40th best, and this is not simply due to phones. I contend that easing restrictions on cellphone use would illustrate a respect for our maturity and independence, thus creating a healthier school environment. Stand with us to advocate for a reasonable policy on cellphone use in schools. Please sign this petition and join our struggle for rights suitable for our age and the digital era.
