The Issue

As a student concerned about emergency situations, I find it essential to have access to cell phones before, after school, and during lunch. Schools across the country have varying policies regarding cell phone use, often aiming at reducing distractions. However, these policies overlook the vital role phones play in our daily communication, especially in emergencies.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 95% of students in America have access to a cellphone. Yet, many are restrained from using this essential tool during necessary times. This restraint doesn't consider emergencies that may require immediate response, thus potentially putting students' safety at risk.

The First Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees the freedom of speech, and the Supreme Court has extended this right to digital communication. In addition to this constitutional right, given the prevalence and importance of digital communication in modern life, students should be allowed the right to stay connected, particularly in emergencies.

Hence, we urge the school authorities to revise the rules and allow cell phone use before and after school, and during lunch breaks. These changes not only respect students' constitutional rights but also ensure their safety, wellbeing, and peace of mind. Please sign this petition to allow cell phone use at our schools.
