The Issue

My name is Mikyle J. Sukoo and as a dedicated student advocate and advisor in Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), I am compelled to raise a voice against the current policy that denies high school students the fundamental right to use their cell phones during lunch hours. While this may not directly affect my daily life, my commitment towards ensuring fair treatment for all students drives me to take a stand.

Lunch time is a sacred reprieve for students amidst a hectic school schedule. It offers them a precious opportunity to unwind, connect with friends, and manage personal affairs. However, the current policy feels unjust as it restricts their capacity to use cell phones during this crucial time, limiting them from engaging in social interactions, staying in touch with family, or simply enjoying peaceful solitude by streaming music or catching up on personal matters.

In Broward County's high schools, where students are expected to follow a rigorous academic routine, having some degree of freedom during lunch is not a privilege, but a necessity. Restricting phone use during lunch does little to prevent distractions during academic learning and instead encumbers unnecessary limitations on students.

Statistically, more than 80% of teenagers own a smartphone, and for many, it serves as their primary means of communication and entertainment. Allowing them this personal time during lunch can foster a healthier school environment, reduce anxiety, and even improve students' overall well-being, which is vital for their academic and personal development.

Balancing the need for an undistracted learning environment with the students' rights to personal freedom requires a reconsideration of existing policies. By allowing cell phone use during lunch periods, BCPS can demonstrate its commitment to embracing a modern educational approach, recognizing the evolving roles of technology in students' lives.

Encouragingly, numerous schools across the nation have successfully integrated flexible cell phone policies without hindering academic performance. Broward County can take inspiration and establish a more student-friendly atmosphere that respects their autonomy, thus enhancing their educational experience.

I urge BCPS policymakers and school administrators to review and revise the current lunch-time cell phone policy. Let us empower students with the trust they deserve and enable them to make decisions that positively impact their school experience. Please support this initiative to create positive change in the lives of our students by signing this petition.
