The Issue

During the 2023 Deer season in Ohio hunters were limited to using archery equipment, shotguns, straight wall cartridges, and muzzleloaders to hunt deer.  We are starting this petition to show the Ohio Department of Natural Resources that Ohio hunters want the option to hunt deer with rifles (i.e. 243, 270, 30-30) just like they can hunt any other non-bird species with those rifles (i.e. coyotes, fox, boar).

Deer hunting with rifles in Ohio can be justified for several reasons, considering both practical and ethical aspects:

- Efficiency and Precision: Rifles are known for their accuracy and precision allowing hunters to use rifles can result in more humane kills, minimizing the chances of wounding and ensuring a quick and ethical harvest. This aligns with the principles of responsible hunting.
- Population Management: Ohio, like many states, faces challenges with deer overpopulation. Allowing the use of rifles can aid in effective population control by enabling hunters to take down deer with greater accuracy. This can contribute to maintaining a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
- Safety Measures: Since 1984 Ohio hunters have been required to take mandatory hunter education. Now 40 years late a large majority of deer hunters have taken hunter education and have proven themselves with hunting accidents decreasing ever since hunter education was required.
- Economic Benefits: The revenue generated from hunting licenses and fees contributes significantly to wildlife conservation efforts. By allowing rifles, Ohio can attract more out of state hunters, boosting the economic benefits associated with hunting for local communities. These funds can be reinvested in conservation programs and maintaining natural habitats.
- Consistency with National Trends: Many states across the U.S., and all of the midwestern states, allow the use of rifles for deer hunting.  Ohio aligning itself with national trends can enhance the state's appeal to hunters, both local and out-of-state, potentially boosting license sales, tourism, and local businesses.
- Traditional and Cultural Considerations: Although rifles have not been used in the last 100 years to hunt deer, it's essential to recognize the evolution of hunting methods. Allowing rifles can be seen as adapting to modern tools while maintaining the core values of ethical and responsible hunting.

In conclusion, permitting rifles for deer hunting in Ohio can lead to more effective harvesting and responsible hunting practices.

We are requesting the ODNR to review the use of bottleneck rifles to hunt deer for the 2025-2026 deer season.
