As a concerned parent and member of the Bishop Fenwick community, I am writing this petition to urge the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) to reconsider their current ruling and allow Bishop Fenwick athletes to compete, while granting 5th year waivers for those who need them. This issue is personal to me as my son is a senior at Bishop Fenwick who was sick during his freshman year of high school. As a result, he repeated a grade and now requires a waiver in order to participate in sports during his fifth year.

My son's story is not unique. There are many students at Massachusetts schools who have faced similar circumstances that have led them to repeat a grade or require an extra year of eligibility. These students should not be penalized for circumstances beyond their control, especially when it comes to participating in sports.

I also have another son at Fenwick who plays a sport every season and wrestles in the winter. This ruling will diminish the entire wrestling program which is a co-op with another school and relies heavily on tournament competition.

By denying these athletes the opportunity to compete, the MIAA is not only depriving them of valuable experiences but also hindering their personal growth and development. Sports play an integral role in shaping young individuals by teaching them important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, perseverance, and leadership. Denying these opportunities can have long-lasting negative effects on these students' lives.

Furthermore, it is crucial for the MIAA to recognize that each student's situation is unique and should be evaluated individually rather than applying blanket policies that fail to consider extenuating circumstances. Granting 5th year waivers would ensure fairness and equal opportunities for all student-athletes across Massachusetts.

To support our cause further, let us consider some relevant facts:

1) The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) allows individual states' athletic associations flexibility in determining eligibility rules.
2) Several states already grant waivers or exemptions for students facing similar situations, demonstrating that alternative policies can be implemented successfully.
3) Research has shown that participation in high school sports positively impacts academic performance, reduces dropout rates, and promotes overall physical and mental well-being.

We believe that by allowing Bishop Fenwick athletes to compete and granting 5th year waivers for those who need them, the MIAA will not only promote fairness but also prioritize the holistic development of student-athletes. This change would align with the values of inclusivity, compassion, and equal opportunities that our community holds dear.

Therefore, we kindly request the MIAA to review their current policy and make amendments that consider individual circumstances when it comes to eligibility for student-athletes at Bishop Fenwick. Let us come together as a community to support our young athletes in their pursuit of personal growth, athletic excellence, and future success.
