Allow bicyles on public transport systems

Petition focussing on: Gautrain, Rea Vaya, Metrorail, and MetroBus

I have spoken to a few of my mountain biking and cycling friends and we have a request that I think Gautrain and Bombela Operating Company, Rea Vaya, Metrorail, and MetroBus should really consider reviewing. The current rule at this stage to take a bicycle on the Gautrain or bus states that it needs to be in a bike bag like the ones that are used when we book our bikes onto flights at the airport - this is exactly the biggest problem with day to day or weekend biking where we want to use the Gautrain or bus to another station and then explore the surroundings or nature trails there. These bags are bulky and we will have no means to store them at the station where we would like to depart on our bikes from and you have to take off your wheels to get the bike into these bags. I also think its a bit unfair, the use of the bike bag is to protect the bike in transit to another destination by airplane and I think with the Gautrain, Rea Vaya, Metrorail, and MetroBus the aim was to protect the train and bus. The bus I use in Centurion does not drop me close enough to work so I end up walking nearly 2kms where I could easily pedal the rest of the way to work like I would pedal to Park Station.

We would like to ask that the rule be reviewed because you allow prams and luggage bags onto the trains and busses with wheels that are a lot dirtier than those of our bikes, the same way we would ask that you would only allow clean bikes onto the train and that they would be held up by their owners in the doorway like most of the parents do with the prams or in the car designed for disabled passengers where there is more than enough space. Please take into consideration that a bike bag ranges anywhere from R1000 - R3000.

With some recent development, we have included Johannesburg MetroBus and Rea Vaya to this petition to ensure that there is a fully integrated, bicycle friendly system.
