The Issue

I am a dedicated parent living in our community who is unable to afford the high cost of eggs due to the rising inflation and economic challenges. This basic necessity has turned into a luxury for my family, making it difficult to provide nutritious meals for my children. Beyond the financial strain, I am deeply passionate about teaching my children valuable, real-world lessons about responsibility, sustainability, and where their food comes from. By raising hens in our backyard, I could offer them a hands-on educational experience that teaches them compassion for living creatures and the lifecycle of food.

Moreover, keeping hens would help reduce our family's carbon footprint and reliance on commercial poultry products, which often involve keeping chickens in unacceptable and unhygienic conditions. The common food scraps can be eaten by chickens and reduce the about of garbage in our landfills. By allowing backyard hens, our community would be taking a strong stance against the inhumane treatment of animals in factory farms, promoting a more ethical and sustainable lifestyle.

However, current local ordinances prohibit keeping poultry in residential backyards. These restrictive laws prevent many families like mine from becoming more self-sufficient and making informed, responsible choices about our food sources. Neighbourhoods that permit backyard hens have reported no significant increase in noise or sanitation issues, dismissing the common concerns that often lead to these prohibitive regulations.

I urge our local council and decision-makers to reconsider these outdated laws and allow residents to keep a small number of hens for personal use, provided that we adhere to reasonable guidelines to ensure the animals' welfare and neighbourhood harmony.

By signing this petition, you will be supporting families in our community who seek to live more sustainably and responsibly, while imparting crucial life lessons to the next generation. Please sign this petition to help us initiate the change needed to enhance our community's quality of life and encourage more humane and educational practices.
