The Issue

In today's unpredictable economy, many of us have faced challenges with the availability and rising costs of groceries, particularly eggs. As a resident of the Village of Silver Creek, NY, I have experienced firsthand the difficulties in securing affordable and reliable sources of these essential food items. This has fueled my desire to promote self-sufficiency and food security within our community by proposing a practical solution that could benefit many local families.

I am calling on the Village of Silver Creek authorities to permit residents to own, keep, and house a limited number of hens or chickens within the village boundaries. Specifically, I am proposing that the village allow backyard flocks of up to 12 chickens total. This would enable residents to produce their own eggs and meat for personal consumption, ensuring a steady supply of fresh and healthy food.

This proposal includes specific guidelines to address any potential concerns of the community:
1. **No roosters** would be allowed, with the exception of meat birds that would be processed no later than 8-12 weeks after acquisition.
2. Chickens would not be permitted to free-range or encroach on neighboring properties, thus preventing any disturbance to others in the community.

Backyard chicken-keeping has proven to bring numerous benefits, such as improving food security, reducing dependency on commercial egg production, and fostering community resilience. Many towns and cities across the country have successfully implemented similar regulations, seeing positive outcomes for their residents.

I urge the village administration to consider this well-structured proposal that could greatly enhance the quality of life for Silver Creek residents. Making this change would not only provide families like mine with an opportunity to grow our own food but also encourage sustainable living practices.

Please join me in advocating for the right to keep backyard chickens in our village. By signing this petition, you will support a stronger, more self-reliant community in Silver Creek, NY. Let's work together to create a healthier and more sustainable future for all residents. Thank you for your support.
