Hey All!
Some of my research shows that the village's response to previous attempts to allow chickens in Machesney Park was that they received more complaint calls than they did GOOD/positive calls on the matter. You can directly call or email the members of the village and say you are in favor of chickens in Machesney Park! This petition has gained a lot of traction very quickly! Over 700 supporters in one week! Reach out!

This is the email that I sent to the village today:
Dear Machesney Park Village Board Members,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing as a 37 year resident of the Machesney Park and the Stateline area as well as a 2006 Harlem High School graduate (Go Huskies!) to respectfully request that the Village Board reconsider the possibility of allowing residents to keep a small number of backyard chickens/hens for personal use.
Within one week of starting an online petition, I have gained over 700 signatures in favor! Many of the local public groups had a majority of positive feedback on this matter. There is tons of evidence that supports the pros of raising chickens for a household and community.
I understand that this issue has been brought before the Village Board in the past. However, I ask that it be viewed with a fresh set of eyes, reflecting the evolving values and priorities of our community. This is a matter that most likely will continue to arise. Many neighboring and similarly sized municipalities have successfully implemented policies allowing responsible backyard chicken keeping.
Reasonable regulations can address concerns while allowing residents the freedom to pursue a more self-sufficient lifestyle. These might include:
Limiting the number of hens (commonly 4–6) and prohibiting roosters
Requiring well-maintained, secure, and clean coops
Setting minimum distances from neighboring property lines
Establishing permitting or inspection requirements as needed
Backyard chickens are increasingly recognized as a part of modern, environmentally conscious living. I hope the Village Board will consider revisiting this matter with community input and explore a solution that respects both neighborhood standards and residents' growing interest in sustainable living.
Thank you for your time, public service, and thoughtful consideration. I would be happy to participate in any discussions, provide resources, or assist in any way to help move this forward.
Sincerely,
Your Machesney Park Neighbor -
Tiffney Hammond
