The Issue

At Memorial Middle School in Mentor, Ohio, a recent rule has been implemented forbidding students from using backpacks during school hours. This policy has created significant challenges for the student body, affecting our organizational abilities, mental well-being, and even health.

Every student at Memorial Middle School, including myself, is impacted by this new rule. As you can imagine, not having access to our backpacks throughout the day significantly increases stress levels. It forces us to rush between classes and locker visits, often leading to forgotten books, materials, or personal items essential for class participation. Anxious about forgetting something and constantly calculating the time it takes to reach our lockers, this policy distracts us from focusing on our studies.

Furthermore, this policy disproportionately affects female students. Without access to backpacks, girls face difficulties maintaining privacy and convenience during their periods. It's an unnecessary hurdle during a sensitive time, something that should be managed with dignity and discretion. Having sanitary supplies easily accessible is crucial, yet this current backpack rule prevents that.

Across the country, schools find that the use of backpacks helps students stay organized, manage their time better, and improve their overall school experience. The National Education Association (NEA) highlights the importance of organizational skills for young students, and backpacks are fundamental in developing these life-long abilities.

Instead of prohibiting backpacks, we could look into setting guidelines on backpack size or employing drawstring bags at the bare minimum to address any safety concerns. This way, we strike a balance between security and student needs.

Please join us in calling on the administration of Memorial Middle School to reconsider the backpack policy. Let's work together to create a learning environment that supports every student’s academic and personal success. Your signature can make a difference. Let's bring change for the betterment of our school community. Sign this petition to urge the school administration to allow backpacks during school hours.
