I am writing this petition on behalf of my 10-year-old son, who bravely faces every school day with alopecia—a condition that has left him completely bald. Thankfully, Brown County Schools have allowed him to wear a hat, which provides a sense of comfort and dignity. However, he still feels different and out of place since he's the only student who gets to wear one. This subtle distinction has a tremendous impact on his mental health, making him feel like an outcast among his peers.

Allowing all students the option to wear hats—if not every day, then at least one or two days a week—would help normalize the situation for him and countless other children who might face similar struggles. It's not just about fashion or preference, but about creating an inclusive environment where all students feel equal and accepted. This small change can have a lasting effect on the mental well-being of students like my son, fostering a sense of community and belonging in school.

An increasing number of schools nation-wide have adopted more lenient hat policies, understanding that such changes can support individuality and inclusivity while still respecting dress codes and school decorum. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 6.8 million people in the United States have alopecia—many of whom are children with similar stories as my son’s. With a more relaxed hat policy, Brown County Schools have a chance to set a precedent, showing that we stand for inclusion and understanding.

Moreover, allowing hats could encourage more students to come to school. Appealing, practical dress codes that consider students’ mental health and comfort can reduce absenteeism and even improve academic performance, as students who feel secure and understood are more likely to focus better in academic environments.

**What we propose**: Introduce a flexible hat policy for students at Brown County Schools, allowing them to wear hats, if not always, at least once or twice a week. Consult with teachers, parents, and students on potential guidelines to ensure a respectful approach while maintaining school standards. This small, yet significant, change can make a world of difference for students like my son in feeling accepted and comfortable.
