As a devoted horse owner, I witness daily the importance of allowing horses access to turnout. It is more than just a preference; it is a basic necessity for their physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, not all livery yards offer the option of winter turnout, depriving these magnificent creatures of their fundamental needs.

Horses need movement to maintain a healthy digestive system and reduce the risk of colic and other ailments. Grass turnout enhances their physical health by providing them with fresh air and natural forage, which is essential for dental health and general wellbeing. The absence of such opportunities, especially during the winter months, can lead to stress, behavioral issues, and compromised physical health.

According to the British Horse Society, horses require at least 1-2 acres of land per horse, with adequate access to graze. However, many livery yards do not adhere to these guidelines during the cold months due to poor management practices or financial considerations. This situation needs immediate redress, making year-round  turnout a legal requirement on all livery yards.

To ensure the welfare of horses across the country, we propose enforcing mandatory regulations that require all livery yards to provide suitable turnout areas throughout the year. This will not only safeguard the well-being of our horses but also promote responsible management practices among horse-care facilities.
