Allocate vacant land for homeless accommodation

The issue

Homelessness is a plight that many, like myself, have faced firsthand. It is a harsh reality to endure, being constantly judged and treated as less than human in the very country we call home. The homeless community often shows more authenticity and kindness than many people realize, and yet we face continual harassment and struggle just to find a place to rest our heads.

In many urban areas, there are countless blocks of vacant land just sitting unused while individuals and families sleep rough on the streets. These lands not only collect dust but also accumulate land rates. Meanwhile, public housing waiting lists stretch on for years, leaving many without hope or shelter. Moreover, landlords are increasingly renting their properties to the government under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for exorbitant amounts, further reducing available rental properties in the market. In a time when the rental crisis escalates, some homes remain unoccupied under the guise of waiting for specific tenants.

The solution I propose is simple yet transformative: designate these vacant land plots as safe zones for homeless individuals and families to set up tents or caravans temporarily. This action would not only provide immediate relief to many but also put to use the land already incurring costs without benefitting the community. It is a win-win situation where the Council can ensure these areas are safe, clean, and secure while giving the homeless a fighting chance.

Harrassment against the homeless by authorities must end. Instead, these officials should aid in facilitating spaces where homeless people can safely reside until permanent public housing becomes available. By adopting a more compassionate and pragmatic approach, we can set a precedent of inclusivity and support.

Our governments have spoken about the rental issues and housing crises, predominantly focusing on new arrivals and programs like NDIS, while neglecting the longstanding citizens sleeping rough. It's time to address this disparity by reallocating existing resources in a manner that benefits all residents.

Join me in urging local councils and government to utilize these unused lands as immediate shelters for the homeless. Our community enrichment lies in reaching out with solutions, not pushing away those in need. Please lend your voice to this cause and sign the petition. Together, we can make our cities havens for all their residents, offering dignity and respect to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. Sign the petition to make a difference today.
