Allocate City Funds for Life Jackets and Lifeguards on Ocmulgee River

Allocate City Funds for Life Jackets and Lifeguards on Ocmulgee River
The Issue
Johnny Collins III, a dear friend and brother to my close friends, tragically lost his life this summer while heroically trying to save his two step-daughters from the swift currents of Ocmulgee River. His tragic story is one of many, as countless individuals fall victim to the waters of Ocmulgee every year. The river, while beautiful and inviting, has posed significant dangers to its patrons, and it is time we take serious steps to ensure the safety of everyone who visits.
The Ocmulgee River is a beloved destination for many residents of Macon, GA, offering a serene spot for recreation and relaxation. However, the joy it brings is overshadowed by the alarming number of drownings occurring annually. Families visit these access points seeking enjoyment, unaware that inadequate safety measures may be in place to protect them.
We urgently call upon the Mayor of Macon, Lester Miller, to allocate necessary funds to hire personnel at each river access point. These individuals would be responsible for ensuring every visitor is equipped with a life jacket and overseeing the return of these jackets. Additionally, hiring qualified lifeguards to man each access point is crucial to prevent any future drownings.
Having a dedicated team at the river can drastically reduce the risks posed to visitors. The presence of lifeguards can not only prevent drownings but also cultivate an atmosphere where safety is a top priority. Combined with the proper distribution of life jackets, these measures can make a significant difference. As well as offer job opportunities working for the city of Macon.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1-14 years. We need to act decisively to prevent further tragedies like the one that befell Johnny Collins III and his family.
Stand with us in making the Ocmulgee River a safe and enjoyable place for everyone. Sign this petition urging city officials to take immediate action by funding these critical safety initiatives. Together, we can protect lives and provide peace of mind to all who visit the Ocmulgee River.
