The Issue

Living in beautiful Reno, Nevada, we are blessed with picturesque landscapes and natural wonders that many travel miles to witness. Yet, despite being locals, we often find ourselves unable to enjoy our very own state parks due to the overwhelming influx of tourists. Sand Harbor is one such gem, known for its breathtaking beaches and azure waters, but accessing it has become a privilege we can hardly exercise.

Currently, all parking reservations at Sand Harbor are open to the public without any preferential treatment for Nevada residents. This results in local families, who wish to relish their weekends amidst nature, being sidelined as tourists flock the area, reserving slots weeks in advance. The increase in tourists not only leads to overcrowding but also leaves locals deprived of the natural beauty surrounding them.

By reserving at least 50% of Sand Harbor's parking spots for Nevada residents, people from Reno and nearby areas will have fair access to enjoy the Lake. It would ensure that families can plan spontaneous trips without the worry of being shut out from what is, in essence, their backyard.

These changes won’t just restore access; they will affirm the state's commitment to its residents. A balanced system can ensure that both residents and visitors can enjoy Sand Harbor, keeping tourism intact while prioritizing local engagement.

We urge the Nevada State Park Authority to acknowledge the pressing need for such a reservation system. Implementing this measure will not only advance fair access but also strengthen the community's bond with their environment. Our request is rooted in equity, and your support can make a great difference. Sign this petition to bring balance and fairness to Nevada's access to its natural resources.
