The Issue

On Tuesday 13th July 2021 AIB announced plans to close its branch in Omagh, the County Town of Tyrone, along with a number of other branches, leaving the bank formerly known as First Trust, with just seven outlets across the North.

The planned move on November 12th 2021 will leave AIB with one of the smallest branch networks here, well behind GB-based lenders such as Santander, Halifax and Nationwide.

The announcement came just days after Danske Bank announced plans to close four of its branches in 2021, with Bank of Ireland announcing plans in March to shut 15 of its branches in the North, and less than a week after Stormont's Finance Committee passed a motion calling on banks to pause their closure plans.

The people of Omagh, and rural Tyrone, are suffering as services are removed from our locality at an ever increasing pace.

The town centre of Omagh is suffering from an exodus of services as well as the on-going difficulties caused by Brexit & Covid.

The Financial Services Union branded AIB'S decision to shut eight branches in the north as ‘a scandalous dereliction of its societal role'.

We must fight to retain our services.

We call on AIB to retain its branch in Omagh, for our County Town, our local population and the staff who work there.

We demand an end to cuts to services in County Tyrone.

Save the AIB Omagh Branch!
