Stop the use of the phrase "To Protect And Serve" on all police cars, police advertisements, or publications. Including all mission statements and department mottos.
The Issue
This slogan is nothing more than simply False Advertising or to put it even more simply nothing more than smoke and mirrors. The police departments across the United States have tried to sell us on the idea that they are here for our benefit but that cannot be further from the truth! The truth is it is the job of police officers to investigate crimes and arrest criminals. What we do not understand is that we are actually on our own when it comes to taking responsibility for our own safety. To help you understand better why this is the case then for one, a great police response time would be 1-2 minutes, but most crimes take place in a matter of seconds. Two, police have no duty to protect me, or you once they do actually arrive.
Based on my call for this change you might think this is an important new ruling, but it’s not. The Supreme Court has repeatedly ruled that police officers at all levels of the government have no duty to protect the citizens of this country. Take for example if you are granted a protection order after a case of domestic violence, the police have absolutely no duty to come actually protect you and even if they did the odds of them getting there in time are slim to none. The fact is they have only a duty to come and arrest the person simply for just violating the protective order not to come protect you from the person in the order. This is once again the police and their false propaganda to trick the public into some false sense of security. To simply give a name of protection to an order is another example of false advertising used by the courts and law enforcement all across our country! We need to get back to the time when call a spade a spade and the facts are that we are really on our own for protection.
The United States Supreme Court has repeatedly kept this stance for over 30 years now. There has been case after case where departments have defended themselves for not being there to protect people when they actually needed them. They have argued time and time again that they had no responsibility to be there for your protection and the court has continued to side with them. In a more recent case of Warren v. District of Columbia, The District of Columbia Court of Appeals case held that the police did not owe a specific duty to provide police services to the plaintiffs based on the public duty doctrine once again proving my point. This point was only proved after a lower court had sided with the plaintiffs for once giving the public a win claiming that the police departments should honor their oaths and fulfill their claims of their duties "to protect and serve." To bad the upper courts disagreed.
My hope is to start some accountability in our police forces which we seem to need more and more of these days. We have to start somewhere even if it's something as simple as the false advertisements they proudly display everywhere. When corporations decide to promote false advertising they are held accountable due to the process available to protect the public from these types of claims. Why should our public officials be any different? Shouldn't they actually be held to a higher standard? After all you can expect these large corporations to lie to us in order to sell us their products but the police you would not expect them to lie to the public yet they are not even providing the services they are claiming to advertise.
If I get a good response to this call for change my plan of action is going to be as follows. I plan to find an attorney that would be willing to take on a class action suit on behalf of the public. I would then in turn take an open petition to allow anyone whom would like to join in on the suit the chance to do so. During this time if funds are needed in order to secure said attorney then at that time I would start a fund raiser drive in order to secure those funds where I would call for any support from any of the supporters of this proposed change to help donate. I would also use the funds to create public awareness and promote the cause in order to get additional backing and supporters. The overall idea would be to somehow effect this change and although I am no attorney and I have no idea if this is even a legal possibility my hope is that it can be achieved. The first step of this process is to start with getting the proper support and after I have achieved that I will explore further possibilities at that time. I of course am open to any suggestions. I hope you will support me on this important endeavor to bring some form of accountability to the police departments claims of " protecting and Serving!" Together we can make this change!
