To start, The Standard Apartments of Tallahassee fails to meet safety regulations.

The emergency alarm does not notify emergency services of any issues that may be occurring. When an emergency alarm was set off August 31st, the fire department was not notified until a resident called. Additionally, the emergency contact number The Standard provides is not reachable beyond standard office hours. The fire department had no one to contact when attempting to locate the fire safety panel, nor is there any responsive phone number, email, or address for residents to contact for any other emergency that may occur. Thus, the fire department left without confidence that the building was entirely safe to re-enter and without turning off the alarms, as they had no way to do so. The alarms went off for over 4 hours throughout the entire complex from 9PM until after 1AM. When speaking with the leasing office the following morning of September 1st, we were informed that there was no way to contact management to address fixing these safety issues (even Corporate) until Tuesday, because they do not work on weekends. Thus, residents are expected to wait two days to address concerns after this incident with obvious security and safety issues still present.

Aside from The Standard not complying to basic safety standards, the entire complex has ripped off residents beyond these essential expectations. Residents pay from $669 to an upwards of $1300 a month. We were all promised the option of early move-in for August 1st, only to be blindsided 2 weeks prior to our expected move-in that we couldn’t move in until Saturday the 24th, 2 days before college classes started, because they were (and still are) behind on construction. Many residents had to pay for or scramble to find accommodations for weeks as previous leases ended before or by August 1st. The complex provided so little lead time that no storage spaces were available, which forced residents to throw away belongings or spend additional hundreds of dollars on temporary housing.

When moving in, residents were expected to pay full rent for August with no option of pro-rating, despite the fact that we paid for only 7 days.

In addition, not a single amenity promised has been finished to this day. The Standard marketed the complex to provide (prepare yourself): a rooftop pool with a jumbotron TV, outdoor gaming, hot tubs, cabanas, a 24/7 gym, private courtyards with grills, fire-pits, and hammocks, a computer lounge and study rooms, tanning beds, saunas, a golf simulation room, a resident lounge, and an arcade and game room, yet not even ONE of these commodities has been finished. The Standard has mislead young college students with these unfulfilled promises through social medias and leasing office advertising using photos from other Standard complexes outside of Tallahassee. Residents were not offered even a small break in rent or a way out of their leases because of the way the lease is drafted. Not only do us residents not have any of the amenities as promised, but until the past week, The Standard didn’t provide working trash shoots, elevators, or consistent security staff despite there being no gate or security system to keep out non-residents (who can easily enter and have already done so). Instead of enjoying these amenities, we are dealing with constant noise problems from living in a construction zone.

The Standard Apartments of Tallahassee has taken advantage of young college students through not only false advertising, but unacceptable safety standards, which if anything, should be an essential provided for a complex with one of the most high-end rents in the city.

We, as residents of The Standard Apartments of Tallahassee, expect either at least 50% break in rent for one month’s rent, or a release from our leases.

Help us bring these issues to the attention of management by signing this petition. Please share, reach out to who you can, and be active.
