Dear Landlords and the UK Government,
Due to recent events, many in London are unable to pay you to live in their homes anymore. Some of us have run out of money after losing our jobs and some of us simply need that money to survive. While the government has suspended mortgage payments for those fortunate enough to own their own homes (and ours!) those of us who are stuck renting get no suspension of rent. Despite what the government says, we are not being protected from eviction: we get just one extra month before you can begin eviction procedings against us, and if you have already begun them we get no protection whatsoever from finding ourselves with nowhere to go in the middle of a global pandemic.
When this is all over we will still have no money, but will be expected to make up the payments that we have missed on top of the extortionate amounts that you already charge us to keep a roof over our heads.
We have decided that we won't pay. If landlords get a clean break from mortgage payments, we get a clean break from rent. Even those of us who could afford to ride it out and pay you rent won't be paying it: we stand in solidarity with those who can't and you can't punish us all. Signatories to this letter declare that they do not intend to pay rent until the COVID-19 crisis is over, and that they stand in solidarity with all other signatories. We will protect each other from eviction - by 'lawful' or unlawful means - as well as anything else that you may try in order to force payment or take away people's homes. We will stand together to keep a roof over our heads and food on our tables.
We demand that the government legislates for a complete suspension of rental payments on homes, with no rent to be paid by anyone until the COVID-19 crisis is over, and with no recourse for landlords to chase tenants for lost rent after the suspension ends. Housing will, essentially, be free during the crisis and no debts will be incurred during this time. Furthermore, we demand that safe and comfortable rent-free homes are provided immediately for all those who do not currently have them. If the government fails to do this, the strike will continue.
We maintain the right to continue the strike after the end of the crisis should people still be left unable to pay.
By standing together in solidarity, we can secure safe and comfortable homes for all, as it should be.
