Council and Housing Associations to reconsider permission for pets in all properties.

The Issue

This will permit more availability to enable swaps from Council/Housing Association properties for tenants wanting to exchange to larger or smaller properties. Not all Councils and Housing Associations operate the same, as some permit small cats/dogs and other do not.

This also enables some tenants who would like a pet who have followed the correct process to request having a small pet to join their family.

As from January 2021 it was passed in Parliment to stop private landlords refusing to house people with pets which now comes under the New Model Tenancy Agreement.  I feel that this should also apply to local Councils and Housing Associations.

Refusals are being given without sufficient substantial reasons as to why. E.g. 1st floor flat with communal access in and out only, despite stating that a tenant would carry a small dog in and out of property, and rehome if the pet was to cause a nuisance to anyone in the property which was refused. Quote: "because the communal door opens out into a communal area however you can have caged or tanked animals without permission" meaning they could have snakes.

There are also other pets already established within other properties and no action take.

We feel that the current policy/process is therefore unfair and we ask for this to be reviewed.

Please support our petition to enable more availability for families to swap to larger or downgrade to smaller properties and enable families to establish a new member to join their family as companions.
