Allow Unkle Adams to present his anti-bullying presentation in Regina's Public Schools

The Issue

Curtis “Unkle” Adams is a 27 year old Rapper, Speaker, Role Model & Counter-Bully born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan. Unkle Adams chooses to use his hip hop status and musical talents to convey important messages into our society, particularly to youth. As a result, kids absorb what he has to say in a remarkable way and actually put it to use. His hit anti-bullying song "I Am Stronger" is inspiring youth and adults alike in countries around the world. Yet he cannot find support from the school division in his own home city! Unkle Adams refuses to change key parts of his anti-bullying presentation regarding bullying related suicide and consequence information in order to please Regina Public Schools. Suicide is a reality of what can happen from bullying and Unkle Adams refuses to sweep it under the rug. "How do we expect to prevent something if we can't even talk about it"? - Unkle Adams. Unkle Adams lists examples of three Canadian teenagers that were relentlessly bullied and as a result, committed suicide. There are no graphic pictures or detailed accounts of their deaths. He simply shows pictures of them when they were alive, explains that they are never coming back, and that the kids need to understand the seriousness of bullying. A moment of silence for all of those who couldn't take it anymore is also incorporated in his presentation. Students, parents and teachers are requesting his presentation in Regina but are being denied by Regina Public Schools. Please sign this petition to allow Unkle Adams to present his anti-bullying presentation in Regina's Public Schools.

We are asking the Elected Members of the Regina Public School Board to overturn Mike Walter's decision to block Unkle Adams from presenting his anti-bullying presentation in Regina's Public Schools.

Unkle Adams VS Regina Public Schools (The FULL story)

Before Christmas of 2013, I sent my information to Regina Public Schools explaining my anti-bullying initiatives in our province. This letter was sent for the simple reason that many schools in Regina have been trying to book me for presentations but are being denied by Regina Public Schools. These kids want to meet me and I want to meet them!

After waiting a month with no response, I called Regina Public Schools several times to try to speak with someone regarding this matter. I received answers like "we know who you are" from the secretaries. After calling them several times and leaving messages, my phone calls were finally returned. They admitted to LOSING my information over the holidays. They judged me before they even got to know me based on the fact that I said "this is a movement" and "be a soldier in the war against bullying" at a Youth Summit in Regina. This is nothing more than a metaphor. Bullying is the enemy and we the people are the army trying to stop it. Ask a parent of a bullying related suicide victim if they think this is a war. Furthermore, I do not say these words in my actual presentation. Finally after pleading my case and writing out an extremely detailed proposal containing all of the information in my presentation, they asked me to come down to their building to present it live. This happened on February 25th. I performed my presentation as passionately as ever and had their heads bopping during the song performance. After the performance they began to pick it apart. I will now list the points we do not see eye to eye on:

-First, the Saskatchewan Red Cross (part of Regina Public School’s bully prevention team) states that bullying is repeated cruel behaviour towards an individual. I AGREE. But at the same time if a handicapped student is mocked and called a “retard” at the mall, is this not bullying because it only happened once?

-Next, Regina Public Schools would rather I use the term "bullying prevention" instead of "anti-bullying". This is completely irrelevant because my initiatives include; awareness, PREVENTION and consequence.

-This brings me to my next point. A member of the Red Cross does not like the fact that I talk about suicide in my presentation. I have one slide, containing examples of three Canadian teenagers that took their lives due to extreme bullying. I agree that this is not pretty, but it is a REALITY of what can happen from bullying. How are we supposed to prevent something if we can’t even talk about it? The three teenagers I use are Amanda Todd, Todd Loik, and Rehtaeh Parsons.

-This member then went on to say that she loved all of the words in my song and wouldn’t change any of them. Well, in my song during the second verse I say “she went to sleep permanently, she drank bleach”. How can this person directly contradict themselves in such a manner? This is one of the people controlling who does and does not speak in our schools?

-My presentation also includes a slide titled "Consequences of being a bully". I then list off a number of things that can happen to someone if they choose to live their life as a bully. It is a warning, informing them of the possible repercussions from such behaviour. One of the affiliate members of this prevention group does not like that, and thinks we should be “kinder” to the bullies.

-They asked me to take a course provided by the Red Cross. After due consideration, I am not interested. The whole thing that makes me unique is that I am NOT just another member from the Red Cross. I am Unkle Adams. I was considering it, until they told me that they still wanted to change my presentation even after taking this two day course.

I will conclude by saying this:

My presentation is accepted with open arms across the province of Saskatchewan and I have NEVER had an issue with a school division until now. My strategy is to give these kids the “meat and potatoes” in a way they will really absorb and put to use. Kids get bored when you over saturate them with statistics. Regina Public Schools agreed with the fact that I can reach kids in a way that they can't. When kids go home from school and go on the internet, they are not typing "Red Cross" or "Regina Public Schools" into Google and YouTube. They are typing in “Unkle Adams”. They want me to change some of the things I say to become things that they want me to say. Anyone who knows me already knows the answer. NO, I will not change who I am or what I want to say to please anyone, especially not to please a small group of people when I am accepted for who I am by thousands. What is the point of nitpicking these small details to death? Their mission should be the same as mine: to lower teen suicide statistics and overall reduce bullying. Kids are singing my song in COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD yet I cannot find support from the school division in my own home city. I am deeply saddened that the public schools in Regina will not be able to see my presentation. Remember to just be you, be yourself and never change to please someone else. I will carry on my mission everywhere I am welcome and keep pushing the STRONGER message!
