I'm starting a petition in British Columbia to introduce dog-friendly train and sky train carts for large dogs. When traveling in and out of BC, pet owners struggle to find suitable transportation. Many dogs feel anxious on airplanes or long car rides, and train services only allow "dogs and cats up to 20 pounds (combined weight of pet and carrier)" (source: Amtrak.com/pets). 

Why This Matters

A More Accessible, Stress-Free Travel Option – A study published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science (source: sciencedirect.com) found that train travel was less stressful for dogs compared to car travel, as the rhythmic motion and ambient noise of trains can have a calming effect on them. 

Promoting Sustainability & Reducing Road Traffic – With more pet-friendly train options, travelers who might otherwise drive can opt for rail travel instead, reducing road congestion and carbon emissions.

Enhancing the Travel Experience – Many pets provide emotional support and companionship. Families and solo travelers alike would greatly benefit from the opportunity to bring their pets along rather than arranging costly and distressing pet boarding alternatives. Numerous non-dog owners have expressed that having dogs on board would make long train rides more enjoyable.

Proposed Pet-Friendly Train Car Policy

• A designated pet-friendly car on select trains, accommodating dogs of all sizes. 
• Clear guidelines for behavior, leashing, and designated seating to ensure a comfortable experience for all passengers. 
• Options for both ticketed pet seating and designated pet rest areas. 
• Clean-up protocols and pet waste stations for hygiene and convenience. 

This initiative would encourage responsible dog ownership, promote public transportation usage, reduce traffic congestion, and contribute positively to the overall well-being of both humans and animals. Many countries worldwide have successfully implemented pet-friendly rail travel, proving that this model can work with the right regulations in place.
