Dear Greens decision makers, Batman voters, the Media and the general Australian public,
This year, on the cusp of an historic, winnable by-election for the Greens in the federal seat of Batman, 18 anonymous people signed a document containing complaints against Alex Bhathal. Their stated purpose was Alex’s dis-endorsement. Their document went through internal party review which found the complaints to lack sufficient evidence. It upheld Alex’s candidacy.
But rather than that settling the matter, the document was then systematically leaked to news outlets.
We see the events outlined above for what they are – an attack not just on Alex and on the Greens but on democratic outcomes.
The many community members who know Alex regard her as a person of honour and integrity. She has been an active and valued contributor to the Greens and to our community for decades. Because of Alex's personal qualities, her principled stance on key issues, her dedication, and her ability to inspire people across our diverse society, the Greens vote has grown in Batman from just 4% in 2001 to 40% in 2018.
We express our wholehearted respect and support for Alex. We stand with Alex, as a powerful, inclusive leader. We stand with her, as someone who has stood up for openness and fairness and against bullying behaviour - and who has paid a high price for doing so. We stand in appreciation of her tireless leadership on human rights, social equity, climate action and the environment broadly. We encourage Alex to continue to stand for election and to remain steadfast in her valued role within both the Greens and our community. We want to see her in parliament.
Justice for Alex is justice for democracy.
