The Issue

Petition to stop the release of: Sacha Baron Cohen’s film "Ali G: Who Iz I?" in UK cinemas.

In the past, entertainment that perpetuated offensive stereotypes was considered acceptable, but one would think that society has evolved to a point where such portrayals are no longer tolerated. This is why we should take a stand against the release of Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film "Ali G: Who Iz I?" in UK cinemas.

Cohen's portrayal in this movie echoes the harm and racial insensitivity reminiscent of infamous shows such as the BBC's Black and White Minstrel Show. This form of entertainment is a recollection of an era where casual racism was normalised and it is abhorrent to witness the resurgence of this form of racism disguised as entertainment in this day and age.

Allowing "Ali G: Who Iz I?" to be shown amplifies a harmful stereotype, mocking the Black British and Muslim communities and distorting our identities for the sake of humour.

The character Ali G is built on stereotypical representations from marginalised groups and ridicule real communities of people using race, economic and cultural appropriation for comedic effect. These depictions can lead to the normalisation of insensitivity towards Black British and Muslim communities and can shape further attitudes in a way that does lasting harm and damage to us.

We need to send a clear message that racial and cultural mockery is not entertainment. We must strive for a media landscape that promotes respect, understanding and inclusivity for all groups. Instead of reinforcing outdated, cheap, ignorant and offensive caricatures, let's encourage film makers to create content that is not racist, classist or otherwise ignorant. That honours diversity and fosters cultural sensitivity.

I urge the UK film classification authorities to reconsider the approval of this film's release in our cinemas and for distributors to take a proactive stance in rejecting content that undermines the dignity and respect of minority communities. This is not about preventing a film from being shown; it’s about upholding values of respect and equality for all of our society.

Please join me in ensuring that cinemas do not become platforms for outdated and harmful portrayals and sign this petition to stop "Ali G: Who Iz I?" from being screened in UK cinemas.
