The foundation of collective bargaining goes beyond discussions about wages and benefits, it also addresses ways to better serve the community. Collective bargaining provides firefighters a real voice on the direction of public safety within Alexandria City and will improve the quality of life for everyone who lives, works or visits Alexandria.

The proposed ordinance prepared by the City Manager and City Attorney is NOT collective bargaining, but a policy that will stifle employee voice. It severely limits the topics of negotiation and provides the City Manager with one-sided discretion to remove workers from bargaining units. Rather than use neutral parties to resolve disputes, it creates a process where the City Manager almost always has the last word. This is NOT collective bargaining; this is the status quo and it doesn’t have to be this way.

City Council will soon be voting to establish collective bargaining in Alexandria and the time is now for Alexandria to be a leader in the region by bringing true collective bargaining to Virginia.

Please show your support for your local firefighters, paramedics and public safety agencies by telling City Council that you support STRONG, FAIR and EFFICIENT Collective Bargaining and the proposed ordinance by the Fire and Police Labor Organizations.
