Yugoslavia was created in 1918 in the wake of WW1 in an attempt to unify the balkans. Previously, the balkans was a very volatile locations, with wars constantly being waged amongst the various ethnicities who resided in this mountainous region. After its creation, Yugoslavia was a fairly stable country, and was ruled by the Serbian monarchy. In the 1940’s the Nazis annexed yugoslavia after politically subverting their leadership, but the people fought on. The chetnik and communist resistance movements both fought valiantly against the Nazi regime, and the Ustasha, a fascist croatian government put in place by the Nazis.
