The very essence of the green, tranquil character of our beloved Manoa Valley is threatened!
Alexander & Baldwin, the new owners of Manoa Marketplace, plans to CUT DOWN 7 mature , canopy Monkeypod trees -- and relocate two more giant Monkeypods -- between Safeway and Long's. They told the Manoa Neighborhood Board in December that this tragic assault would happen in JANUARY. Community members hotly protested, forcing A&B to push back the removal date to "the near future." Despite impassioned community resistance to these plans, A&B continues with this massive attack on the trees and the character of Manoa Valley.
Professional landscape architects and arborists have advised A&B that the trees are completely healthy and that liability issues, root growth and buckling asphalt issues are easily solved by putting attractive planters around the trees.
A&B plans to add 57 additional parking spaces by cutting down the Monkeypods. Many alternative creative solutions were made to help A&B with their claim that they need additional parking. Their plan to re-stripe the parking lot alone will add lots of spaces and they could also increase parking in the area BEHIND the existing buildings. Residents testified that rarely, if ever, is the parking lot full.
In several meetings with A&B, community members offered many alternatives of SAFE SPACE areas for the trees and suggested that A&B consult with the experts at the University of Hawaii's Urban Forestry and Landscape Design departments. Residents have made offers of assistance from qualified local gardeners and planners living in the Valley.
Residents also encouraged A&B to visit the Pacific Club and Nuuanu YMCA to learn how they maintain canopy trees in their parking lots.
Yet A&B continues with its plan to remove the trees.
