Dear Supporter,
After months of failed discussion with Aldi’s German parent company (Aldi Süd) to get Aldi to commit to phasing out gestation crates, Animal Equality ─ a global farmed animal protection organization ─ launched a protest to expose glaring differences in how animals are treated in Aldi Süd’s German and U.S. supply chains.
In Germany, Aldi Süd is known as a leader in animal welfare and does not use gestation crates for pregnant pigs. On the other hand, its U.S. subsidiary continues to lack a clear policy commitment to transition away from crates.
Animal Equality is calling on Aldi Süd to implement the same animal welfare standards for pigs and hens in its U.S. supply chains as are already applied in Germany, and also by its main competitors in the U.S.
Here’s How You Can Help: Politely Ask Aldi Why It Won’t Commit to Phasing Out Gestation Crates
Call Aldi's Customer Service Line at (800) 325-7894, Mon–Fri 9am–5pm EST.
- An automated response will ask how it can help. Simply say you want to learn more about the protests in Europe regarding Aldi’s pig welfare policies.
- Next, a live person will get on the phone. Ask them if: (1) They can provide more information about the protest in Germany calling on Aldi’s parent company to get the U.S. to improve animal welfare standards. (2) Aldi has any plans to require its pork suppliers to transition away from extreme confinement practices (gestation crates).
Note: Aldi may tell you that it doesn’t farm its own animals. Tell them you know this, and that’s why you are asking them to require their suppliers to stop using crates. They might also ask you for a product code, but simply say you are referring to their generically labeled fresh pork.
Thank you … and please post the responses you get from Aldi in the discussion section below.
