Paul Kelvington started this petition to Alderman Tom Tunney - 44th Ward Chicago

Gus..... The full name was Gus Mavraganes, but everyone knew him as Gus! And, like so many thousands of us out in the neighborhood, if you ate at Stella's Diner you knew that name well. Gus was an institution, much like his family's diner, but he was so much more than Stella's for so many people. What have we all seen or heard about him? Fearless leader of the diner, always wading in to help during the busiest of any services, trickster, classic-car enthusiast, tattoo lover and confidant to many.  I had several chats myself with Gus over the years, and after his passing have read stories about the many times he lent an ear to those who needed one the most. And what of that familiar greeting when local regulars came into Stella's? Hearing the words "Hello family" always made me feel like I was at home........

Let's also not forget how, in his own inimitable way, Gus loved our children! Good grades, bad grades, birthdays, holidays, there was always something special between him and our kids. Perhaps it was the little jobs many of them had around the restaurant, or the way he would just pick up your child and whisk them away! Gus was also not short on advice about child-rearing, offering tips on everything from how to feed that stubborn baby to multi-tasking them, and legend (urban legend that is...) has it that Stella's Cobb Salad had a magical power to induce labor in even the most stubborn of babies.

Yes, Gus had that special magic that helped make Stella's Diner what it became and still is today! As a former waiter, I would watch how he interacted with his staff, and saw how he kept a tight watch (most of the time), but clearly cared for all who worked for him. I would think that for those who regularly frequent Stella's we all have a personal connection with one or more of the staff, and enjoy seeing them when we come in. Gus made that possible by making us all comfortable being around each other. We locals have been in to celebrate many occasions, from Mother's Day to Nettelhorst graduations, from in-laws visiting to the take-out burger we just had to have, the list could go on forever.

Let's celebrate Gus in a way that is deeply meaningful and will honor the corner that he made so vital not only to our lives, but to our neighborhood at large! With the blessing of the family, once this petition reaches (at least) 3,000 signatures it will be delivered to Alderman Tunney for presentation to City Council for a motion. (However, 5,000 might seal the deal!) That motion would be to rename the stretch of Barry Avenue between Broadway and Halsted streets "Honorary Gus Mavraganes Way"! A ceremony would happen in the Spring, beginning with a classic car tribute from his peers through the neighborhood followed by an unveiling and (possibly) a block party to celebrate. Please sign this petition, and if you would rather not do so online, there are paper petitions at Stella's for you to sign! Let's make this honor happen for our friend, and insure his legacy will remain long after we're all gone!!!
