No to toxic fumes in McKinley Park! Shut down the new asphalt plant at Damen & Pershing.

We the undersigned hereby demand that the new MAT Asphalt LLC plant, located at 4010 S Damen Ave, be shut down and relocated to an area further away from 12th Ward residents and homes immediately. The current location, directly across the street from McKinley Park, 1,100 feet from the nearest home, and 1,300 feet from a school, is unacceptable. McKinley Park's air quality, health, and overall livability will be severely impacted by the 100 - 200 diesel trucks per day, as well as pollution and carcinogens from the asphalt production, odors, increased traffic, noise, and dust from materials and heavy industrial operation. This is also a concern for not just McKinley Park but for the surrounding communities of Brighton Park and Back of the Yards, all being predominately working class Latino neighborhoods. Alderman Cardenas knew the plant was coming over a year ago but did not bother to notify the community. The asphalt plant was constructed quickly, secretly, and without community input. It can be dismantled just as quickly and moved. Stop production and move the plant now.
