Why this petition matters

We at BikerFest Block Party Corporation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, respectfully call on all city of Milwaukee alderpersons to implement “Watch Out For Motorcycles” signs throughout the city for the safety of our motorcyclists. Our goal is to reduce the number of motorcycle-related accidents in Milwaukee.

Over the years, there has been a growing interest in the sport resulting in an increase of new riders; therefore, motorcycle-related accidents are rising steadily. An increase in alcohol-related crashes, police chases, and untrained riders (higher gas prices causing people to seek more cost-effective means of transportation) are considered the main reasons for the spike in motorcyclist deaths. Overall, almost half of motorcycle accidents occur at intersections when cars don't see or fail to yield to an oncoming bike.

Statistics show that a motorcycle crashes roughly every four hours on Wisconsin roadways. As more motorcyclists take to the roads during the warm months, it is crucial to keep safety the main priority. Every year, thousands of crashes occur in Wisconsin, resulting in an average of 77 deaths per year. Between 2014 and 2019, a total of 14,700 motorcycle crashes occurred. Over 1,500 of those crashes were in Milwaukee County alone.

Statistics show that most motorcycle crashes occur on local roads. We believe that initiatives like this will encourage motorcycle safety and reduce these rates dramatically. BikerFest encourages you to sign this petition to move Milwaukee city officials to add "Watch for Motorcycle" signs throughout the city. We want bikers to be recognized as #peopletwo and encourage drivers to share the road to make safer streets.

We believe no other safety initiative will deliver better results than making drivers aware of bikers on the road. The data is evident; signs reduce collisions between motor vehicles and motorcyclists. It is well documented that drivers don’t often see motorcycles or at least don’t look for them or see them as a threat.

We frequently hear about the dangers of riding motorcycles, but we don’t think about what we can do to protect them. Start here! Signing this petition is a great start to saving lives and send the message that bikers at #peopletwo

We want to see the community doing more to protect our loved ones who ride on two wheels. Would you please help us in reaching this goal for safer streets for all to ride and doing what we can as a community to keep more people safe?
