Despite an always growing body of scientific research revealing that even a small amount of alcohol can cause cancer and increase chances of death, most Americans believe drinking to be a relatively safe and natural activity. If alcohol manufacturers were required to acurately label the alcoholic beverages, consumers would be better informed about the dangers of drinking and would be equipped to make sound decisions regarding how much and how often they drink.

Presently, the requirements for the dangers of alcohol are minimal, nearly invisible on most labels. Under current federal law, all bottles of alcohol sold in the U.S. must include: “Government Warning: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.” The warning appears in small print on the back of the label, along with serving facts, nutritional values, and the barcode. The last time this warning was updated was thirty years ago.

With new studies and new information on the harms of alcohol, it's time for this warning label to be updated.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol consumption raises the risk of six different kinds of cancer, and even light consumption (less than one glass a day) heightens the risk of contracting esophageal and breast cancer. If label requirements changed to a more visible (brightly colored, large font, centrally located) message, more consumers would understand the risks that they are taking by drinking alcoholic beverages.

BreakFree believes the warning should include:

Alcohol is an addictive substance. Consumption of alcoholic beverages can lead to numerous health risks including stroke, heart failure, cancer and cirrhosis.
