Alberta Health Services: Reverse decision to close Slave Lake Air Ambulance

On May 17, 2013 Alberta Health Services announced the upcoming closure of the Slave Lake Air Ambulance base.
Transit time for medevac patients has already been increased due to the recent closure of the Edmonton Municipal Airport. The elimination of the Slave Lake air ambulance will add at least another 40-50 minutes travel time for patients needing hospital treatment. Considering that time is of the essence when emergency treatment is required and that mortality rates increase dramatically when patients are unable to receive treatment with every minute of delay, an air ambulance based in Slave Lake is essential.
Slave Lake is a hub for health care in north central Alberta, serving many small outlying communities that have limited health care facilities. Slave Lake itself struggles to offer many basic and essential services including obstetrics due to a shortage of physicians. This lack of service makes the need for an air ambulance in our community even more critical.
The people of the Slave Lake region have relied on the air ambulance for nearly 40 years for timely access to medical services including critical and emergency care. The closure of our air ambulance base will have a negative impact on the people in our community who have experienced enough trauma in their lives. The people of Slave Lake deserve equitable access to health care as guaranteed under the Canada Health Act. Please reverse the decision to shut down the Slave Lake Air Ambulance.
