The Issue

This story is about a 4-year-old, Amber, who went with her dad to see a dentist for a routine dental check up on September 7, 2016.

On arrival, the dentist suggested a minor same-day procedure for Amber for which she would need to be put under general Anesthesia. Due to the cancellation of an appointment that day, the dentist expressed his wish to proceed with Amber's procedure that same day. Amber's dad had cautioned the dentist that Amber had eaten breakfast and she wasn't fasting. The dentist carried on with the procedure stating that it should be fine.

During the operation, Amber had a lack of oxygen to her brain and was rushed to the hospital right away. An MRI showed that Amber had been left with a brain injury. It has been over 3 months, and she hasn't regained her full consciousness and remains unresponsive. Her parents are still waiting for her to fully recover. Both her parents have quit their jobs with the goal of spending every precious moment with Amber.

While Amber's parents are hoping for Amber's fastest recovery, they are also waiting for answers in regards to what went wrong during the surgery. The Dental Association of Alberta has refused to provide any details pertaining to this case, and have bluntly told Amber's dad "We simply don't have to provide any explanation."

All we want to know is:

Why are Amber's parents not receiving key information from the Dental Association about their daughter's case? What law prevents parents from receiving information about their four year old daughter who sustained serious brain damage during a regular dental visit?

If four year old Amber can go through such a horrific situation, then so can any other four year old - it could be anyone's child.

Please help us with obtaining much needed information from the Dental Association of Alberta so that no other family has to suffer the way Amber's family has been suffering.
